I’ve written a book about my experience as a parent of a child with Asperger Syndrome, or as it is now referred to – Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).

I titled the book ‘My Little Alien’ because that’s how my son (my youngest child of four) seemed to me; he interpreted the world from a new and delightful perspective.

I wrote this book to help other parents of children with Asperger Syndrome navigate the sometimes-challenging terrain of integrating their child into the conventional world we live in.

The book is divided into two parts. The first part is a story about our personal journey. It is mostly from my perspective, but my son has also included some fascinating narrative as a teenager and again as a young adult. The second part is a step-by-step guide for parents and/or teachers.

My son is now married with a baby. He has an Honours Degree in Psychology, and he is currently studying a Master’s Degree in Teaching. He worked with me very diligently from an early age to achieve a great deal, including developing keen emotional intelligence and effective social skills.

More Details

This book is written for parents, teachers, carers, grandparents, or anyone who cares for, works with, or loves a child with Asperger Syndrome. Those with Asperger Syndrome, including adults, might also enjoy reading it.

The first half of the book is a case-study about the author’s son from his birth to the time of this publication (when he is 24 years of age). This section includes an interview with him when he was a teenager, and again last year, as well as a reflective chapter written by him which is particularly inspiring.

The second part of the book is a practical helping guide – teaching ideas, pointers, suggestions, observations, warnings, explanations, remedies – for parents, families and practitioners. It has successfully been used in draft form by counselling clients and interested others.
